It finally happened. We left our house in such excitement, windows down, music up, racing to Mile 0. We had decided that this starting point of the Trans Canada Highway would also be the starting place of our journey. After dipping our toes in the Pacific Ocean for what would be the last time in months, we ran back up to Westy to hit the road!
Yesterday we made the trek to Kelowna. The drive was gorgeous! We decided to pull over to the side of the highway to steal some sun and enjoy lunch in our camping chairs. We got a few stares, but it was so relaxing to be at our own pace instead of our usual feeling of constantly rushing to the next destination. I guess that's the beauty of living out of your van, home is wherever you are :)
For any of you thinking of one day doing a road trip like ours, here's a few rules of the road we've picked up so far:
1. Do not sleep in a WalMart parking lot if the WalMart is attached to a mall. You will be asked to leave at 1:30 am.
2. Do not listen to WalMart employees. They have no idea if you are allowed to park there.
3. You can walk into any rec center across Canada, tell them you're traveling and they will let you use the showers for free!
4. There is no use speeding up a mountain-Westies don't go fast. Put your hazards on and get behind the semies.
Hopefully we'll pick up a few more for you as we go!
Oh, and P.S. Don't worry parents, we're safe.

weeeeee! i have always wanted to do this trip so i'm stoked that you guys are doing it an i can live vicariously through you via the internet! thank god for technology. have fun!

Are you sticking to the Trans Canada, or will you be making side trips? Looks like you have a great home on wheels. When Marty and I did this trip (from East to West) and around your age, we were driving a really old Datsun 510, and camping in a tent. We learned a lot about car repair, and getting car parts at auto-wreckers. I have to say it remains way up there as one of the best trips we have taken so far. We had a blast, and I'm quite sure you will, too! Can't wait to see you in Ottawa, but take your time and smell the roses on the way. LINDA
ReplyDeletePURELY AWESOME :) so glad you guys are sharing your adventure with us!! I love the idea of pulling over and enjoying lunch while relaxing on some lawn chairs :) I'm packing a couple of those along on our next road trip/long drive :) Hope it's still going great and you guys are safe! <3
